A Quote from Chickasaw History...
"We never had a thought of exchanging our land for
any other, as we think that we would not find a country that would suit us as
well as this we now occupy, it being the land of our forefathers..." Levi
Colbert (Itawamba Mingo) 1826
The families I researched were
Chickasaw families
Their histories are interlocked with the history of the Chickasaw Nation. Some
ancestors of our family were members of the ruling class in the Chickasaw Nation
and were revered chiefs and leaders.
They played an active role in the shaping of the United States, taking part
in treaties & meetings with England, France, Spain and the newly formed United
States.
They were instrumental in helping their people, before and after the Indian
Removal to the Indian Territories. The Chickasaw Nation fared far better than
many other tribes during "the Trail of Tears" because our ancestors
helped them deal shrewdly with the Government of the United States.
We do indeed share an ancestry that is rich in history.
Where did I begin?
I looked back to my great-great grandmother, Frances Elizabeth Kemp,
and her interview for the Oklahoma
Indian-Pioneer Interviews in 1937 for insight and clues, thankfully,
she names her parents & grandparents.
How did I start?
Frances Elizabeth Kemp's grandson

"For you Dad, with love"
